AND MUSiC FROM KENNY LOVE, DiANE SCHUUR AND MORE!!!
FEBRUARY 12, 2012 - The weekly online radio series Jazzed and Blue: Profiles in Blues and Jazz is back and is now available for download at Rockwired.com and features an exclusive interview with Robert Vermeulen of the Talking Cows regarding their brand new release Almost Human. In the opening segment, Vermeulen discusses the inspiration behind the tracks of this new project, his rapport with the other members of the band including saxophonist Frans Vermeerssen, drummer Yonga Sun and bassist Dion Nijland and the lunatic sense of humor of the band that finds its way into their equally lunatic progressions. The second half of this edition of Jazzed and Blue will feature music from such jazz and blues artists as Kenny Love, Mozik, Marilyn Mcleod, Tom Wopat, Jason Hemmens and more. “After being gone for about three months, it is great to finally be back and doing this show again. " says Jazzed and Blue host Brian Lush. “It's a real treat to end a long week with a show like this and to kick back and listen to some great music."
The band's musical ethos embraces the vast array of musical styles percolating in the vibrant Dutch jazz scene. The group was founded in 2004 by pianist Robert Jan Vermeulen and saxophonist Frans Vermeerssen, musicians had never played together because they came from totally different areas of the Dutch music scene. But they had long admired one another's playing and were both fans Misha Mengelberg and his music.
They decided to make the group "a celebration of differences" so that their diverse musical backgrounds became the subject of the group's material. In drummer Yonga Sun and bass player Dion Nijland, Talking Cows boasts an ideal rhythm section; both are creative musicians with an open mind and experience in playing different styles.
The genre-hopping, contradiction-embracing style has become a hallmark of Talking Cows. On Almost Human, the eclectic sound based on catchy, often hummable themes that are fragmented and defragmented and flirt with chaos before taking on recognizable features once is the mark of a band with a distinct musical identity. After seven years of pushing each other musically, this is a solid, flexible and wholly original ensemble.
Since their founding, Talking Cows has performed in clubs and at festivals in the Netherlands and abroad, made numerous radio recordings, a bevy of TV appearances and released two critically acclaimed CDs: Bovinity (2006) and Dairy Tales (2008). With a growing international profile, Talking Cows is now considered a leading exponent of Dutch jazz. Their irreverent online videos about farmers, cows and jazz have spread like wildfire, making them even more popular, getting some 50,000 hits!
