ROCKWIRED.COM
is pleased to be re-launching the online radio series
ABORIGINAL SOUNDS - A CELEBRATION OF CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN
INDIAN AND FIRST NATIONS MUSIC after a rather lengthy hiatus.
To kick of the re-launch we shine a light on THE BLACK OWL SOCIETY - a
musical project by bassist BUFFALO MAN (Yankton Sioux). For the better
part of the nineties and even into teh aughts, BUFFALO MAN was one half
of the rhythm section for the quintessential rez rock band INDIGENOUS.
Raised on their father's blues collection and his insistence
that hiskids would be touring with B.B. KING one day, BUFFALO MAN and
his siblings earned their chops the hard way and it paid off
in spades with a string of albums and a live set that has electrified
both Indian Country and notable venues from throughout the world.
Suddenly , a change occured inthe band and singer and guitarist MATO
NANJI carriedon as INDIGENOUS on his own leaving the rest ofthe family
wondering what to do next. BUFFALO MAN picked up the guitar,
started writing and started THE BLACK OWL SOCIETY. On their
new EP BURN THE PAST, THE BLACK OWL SOCIETY throw down some
of the most gut bucket, primal blues sounds mixed with
traditional native drumming and BUFFALO's CHRIS CORNELL-styled wail and
the songs themselves examine what teh hell is going on in Indian
Country. This ain't "my baby done left me" styled blues. This is raw
primal music with a message. After being slightly under the
radar since the unceremonious parting of ways with INDIGENOUS
it is safe to say that BUFFALO MAN has found his way home and has found
his own musical identity.

Writing from the UNIVERSITY OF
NEW MEXICO. He established ROCKWIRED on New Years of 2004 and hasn't
looked back
since. He is currently the host of all of ROCKWIRED.COM's programming
which includes such shows as ROCKWIRED RADIO PROFILES and ROCKWIRED
FREE FORM RADIO. As
program producer for ROCKWiRED.COM, LUSH is hands-on when it
comes to
interviewing and building a lasting rapport with the artists that come
ROCKWiRED's
way. As a youngster, BRIAN LUSH had no idea what kind of seed was being
planted
by reading magazines such as HIT PARADE, HIGH TIMES, SPIN, REQUEST
(remember
that one?) and even ROLLING STONE. "Those were the days before the
internet and being a rock journalist
looked
like the coolest job imaginable." says LUSH "But reading these
magazines had me
imagining that one day I'd be the artist giving all of the clever
answers to
some poor guy with a tape recorder. Well, life has a way of surprising
you.
Now, I'm the poor guy with the tape recorder and asking all of the
questions."
